WGBH Radio first airs.
October 6, 1951
Its first program is a live broadcast of the Boston Symphony Orchestra from a studio across the street from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge. The station initially broadcasts programs from 3:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. every day, except for Friday afternoons, when it airs the BSO’s weekly open rehearsals. At the time, it is estimated that only 15% of Boston households have FM receivers. After a fire in its studio in 1961, the station moves into borrowed quarters, then to a new building (first) on Western Avenue in 1964,* and then its current studio (second) on Guest Street in 2007.*
